Debbie and I had family prayer with Tony, Jody, George, Laura, Patrick, Anndalyn, Jared, Jani, Ryan, Stephanie and their children buefore the party started breaking up.
I had some time today to contemplate a spiritual thought Stephanie
shared with the family last night from Come Follow Me we have been reading
in the Book of Mormon. We learn of two periods
of time, hundreds of years apart, two different groups of people who lived on
the American continent. The first group
became extent and the second self-destructed, for the same reason. The destruction was caused by contention in the hearts and minds of the people. The contention was so intense they
could not reason together.
The devil is the author of
contention and hatred. The Lord taught
the people through Amulek (Alma 34:32-34), “….this live is the time for men
(and women) to prepare to meet God; …this life is the day for men to perform
their labors………for after this day of life, which is given to us to prepare for
eternity, behold, if we do not improve our time while in this life, then cometh
the night of darkness wherein there can be no labor performed. Ye cannot say, when ye are brought to that awful
crisis, that I will repent, that I will return to my God. Nay, ye cannot say this; for that same spirit
which doeth posses your bodies at the time that ye go out of this life, that
same spirit will have power to possess your body in that eternal world.”
…..And it came to pass that the people repented not of their
iniquity; and the people of Coriantumr were stirred up to anger against
the people of Shiz; and the people of Shiz were stirred up to anger against the
people of Coriantumr; wherefore, the people of Shiz did give battle unto the
people of Coriantumr….
Coriantumr saw that there had been slain by the sword already
nearly two millions of his people, and he began to sorrow in his heart;
yea, there had been slain two millions of mighty men, and also their wives and
their children. Book of Mormon, Ether chapter 15: 2,6
The second group of people in the Americas.
Forth Book of Nephi 2: And it came to pass in the thirty and sixth year (A.D.), the
people were all converted unto the Lord, upon all the face of the land, both
Nephites and Lamanites, and there were no contentions and disputations
among them, and every man did deal justly one with another…… 16 And there were no envyings, nor strifes, nor tumults, nor
whoredoms, nor lyings, nor murders, nor any manner of lasciviousness; and
surely there could not be a happier people among all the people who had
been created by the hand of God…. 24 And now, in this two hundred and first (A.D.) year there
began to be among them those who were lifted up in pride, such as the wearing
of costly apparel, and all manner of fine pearls, and of the fine things of the
world….. 35 And now it came to pass in this year, yea, in the two hundred
and thirty and first year (A.D.), there was a great division among the people…. Mormon 3:8 And in the three hundred and sixty and second year (A.D.)
they did come down again to battle. And we did beat them again, and did
slay a great number of them, and their dead were cast into the sea.
5:2 ……..I knew the judgments of the Lord which should come upon
them; for they repented not of their iniquities, but did struggle for their
lives without calling upon that Being who created them. 6:11 And when they (Lamanites) had gone through and hewn down all (thousands)
my people (Nephites) save it were twenty and four of us, ……... having survived
the dead of our people…. 18 But now, behold, they are led about by
Satan, even as chaff is driven before the wind, or as a vessel is tossed about
upon the waves, without sail or anchor, or without anything wherewith to steer
her; and even as she is, so are they.
Mormon 3:22 And I would that I could persuade all ye ends of the
earth to repent and prepare to stand before the judgment-seat of Christ.
Most of times, PRIDE is at the root of contention, not humility, not patience nor long suffering. Contention feed on itself and continues to increase until a person, a family, a community and a country are consumed with HATE. It is no wonder the Lord said the two greatest commandments are LOVE GOD and LOVE your enemies. (Matthew 5:44 and 22:37)
