I sent an email to Sister Alexandra "Alex" McAlpin: Dear Sister McAlpin,
We are at your Uncle Matt and Aunt Melodie's spending time with them and your nieces, Madeline, Bella and Ava. Next week we are headed up to see your mom and Aunt Beth. Your dad will not be home until next week-end. We are excited to see your brothers, sister and your other nephews and your niece.
Grandma Debbie and I were talking this morning and thought you would enjoy this thought; you have this innate quality that Christ talked about. The parable portrays the love the Lord has for us.
“”A group of firefighters were working to control the last bits of what had been a raging wildfire when one firefighter saw a charred lump in the middle of the road and went to investigate. As he got closer, he saw that it was the remains of a hen.
He wondered what circumstances had left the bird incapable of flying away—had it been injured or sick?
He decided to scoot the charred bird off the road with his foot, but as he moved it he was shocked to see four small baby chicks scuttle out from behind the mother’s body.
Rather than escaping herself, this mother then gathered her chicks and sacrificed herself to keep them safe from the flames.
When the resurrected Christ came to the Nephites, one of the first things he said was, “how oft will I gather you as a hen gathereth her chicks under her wings, if ye will repent and come unto me with full purpose of heart,” (3 Nephi 10:6)
.
What beautiful symbolism to illustrate that “Christ is the ultimate gatherer.” (Elder Holland)
.
As the Psalmist so poetically wrote,
“When my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I.
“For thou hast been a shelter for me, and a strong tower from the enemy.
“I will abide in thy tabernacle for ever: I will trust in the covert of thy wings.”
Like that mother hen, Christ will not leave us, no matter how dire our circumstance. He sacrificed Himself so that we could be sheltered.
When our hearts are overwhelmed, know that we can trust our Savior and run under His wings.
He has you covered.”
We love you,
Grandpa and Grandma Debbie
