Call GA/US Forester in Carrollton about heart pine, and questions about long leaf and Short Leaf; Short Leaf need sandy soil like that found in Florida, South Georgia and along the Atlantic cost.  Short Leaf is not native to Northwest Georgia and does not grow well in our clay soil.  Long Leaf is also found in South Georgia, Florida and the cost but it is also found in Northwest Georgia and does well here in the clay. Both mature trees and grass-stage specimens are fire-resistant. The lifespan of a longleaf pine spans several centuries. These slow-growing trees live for over 300 years, and they may take up to half that time to reach their full size.                 Longleaf pine takes 100 to 150 years to become full size and may live to be 500 years old.  The longleaf pine grows to a height of 60–80' and a spread of 30–40' at maturity.    FOOD PLOTS FOR WILDLIFE: For Deer it is recommend fall plantings of cereal grains such as wheat, rye or forage oats to provide "green strips" that provide nutritional forage for both deer and turkeys. “Winter wheat and Triple Threat Clover (Ladino Clover, Red Clover, Yellow Clover)               Turkeys like the grains planted for deer; they also love acorns and pecans, as well as dogwoods, huckleberries, blueberries, and other fruits found in the understory.
